Tutoring Triumph

Tutoring services are expected to be a part of the new Adawe LifePlan Center, with the

Center for Academic Excellence to be used as a satellite space.

Tutoring at OU is available in a wide range of subjects including algebra, english, biology and psychology.

“My favorite part about being a tutor is the interaction I have with students who have a hard time with math,” Brandon Nichols, math education major said.

Tutoring services are run through the Center for Academic Excellence in Myers Library. Student tutors send out their schedules via e-mail and most are available to take appointments for students who are unable to attend scheduled sessions.

Nichols offers tutoring for algebra students two or three times a week. He takes homework questions from the students that need help on their assignments. Nichols focuses on the coursework for the week or material for an upcoming quiz.

This is Nichols’ first year tutoring at OU; however, he tutored in high school and plans to continue tutoring for the rest of his time at OU.

“Tutoring is a good program for anyone who needs help in any subject,” Nichols said.

Nichols said he would like to teach math at the high school level or college level when he graduates and said being an algebra tutor helps him stay fresh in different levels of math.

Tutoring also has big advantages for participants.

“The tutors are there to help, not to judge. They make sure you understand the material before going to the next question or topic,” Michael Matos-Hoogliuter, freshman, who has used tutoring for algebra and english said.

He said he likes to have more explanation on his algebra to make sure he understands the material. He also takes advantage of the english tutoring for the peer editing to make his papers better.

The free tutoring services are available to all students and sessions are held at various times on campus.

“I like helping the students understand the problems with easy ways of explaining it to them. It’s awesome when the students say they feel prepared for the quiz after the tutoring session,” Rachel Landrum, algebra tutor.
